Delete pages, extract pages or split: which one do you need?

By the fullpdftools team · Updated

Quick answer: Remove Pages when you want the same document minus a few pages; Extract Pages when you want a few pages out of a big document as a new file; Split PDF when one PDF should become several files. All three copy pages without quality loss and leave your original file untouched.

These three tools all select pages, so they are easy to mix up. The difference is what you get back. Picking the right one saves you from typing a long list of page numbers when a short one would do.

A useful rule: type the shorter list. If you want to keep 48 of 50 pages, remove the 2. If you want to keep 2 of 50 pages, extract the 2.

Typing page numbers

All three tools accept the same notation, and Remove and Extract also let you click page thumbnails instead.

Use the page numbers your PDF viewer shows (the first page is 1), not the numbers printed on the pages. A report whose numbering starts after a cover and contents page will be off by two or three.

Removing pages: what to watch for

Extracting pages: one file or many?

By default, Extract Pages puts all selected pages into one new PDF, in their original order. Tick Save each page as a separate PDF to get a ZIP with one file per selected page instead, which is handy for certificates or single-page forms. For larger, multi-page parts, Split PDF with page ranges is the better fit; our splitting guide explains the range syntax with examples.

Your original stays safe

None of the three tools changes the file on your device. They read it, build a new PDF in your browser and offer that as a download. Keep the original until you have checked the new file, especially before deleting anything for good.

Frequently asked questions

How do I delete one page from a PDF?

Open Remove Pages, click the thumbnail of the page you want gone (or type its number), then click Remove Pages and download the new PDF.

How do I save only certain pages of a PDF?

Use Extract Pages: select the pages you want, for example 1, 5-7, and download them as a new PDF.

Can I change the order of pages while extracting?

Extracted pages keep their original order. To reorder, extract the pages as separate files and combine them in the order you want with Merge PDF.

Does deleting pages make the file smaller?

Usually yes, because the removed pages’ images and text are no longer included. Fonts shared with other pages stay.

Can I undo a page removal?

Your original file is never changed, so just start again from it.
