How to merge PDF files without losing quality
Updated September 2026
Merging PDFs is one of the most common document chores: a job application needs a cover letter, CV and certificates in one file; an accountant wants twelve monthly statements as a single document; a scanner produced a separate file for every page. Done well, merging is lossless — the pages are copied as they are, not re-rendered. Here is how to get a tidy result. Whether you call it combine PDF or merge PDF online, keeping the PDF order right is what makes the result usable.
Prepare before you merge
- Name files so they sort correctly. Prefixes like 01-cover.pdf and 02-cv.pdf make the intended order obvious.
- Remove what you don’t need. Blank scan pages and duplicate sheets are easier to drop from the source file with Remove Pages than to hunt for later.
- Check for passwords. A password-protected PDF can’t be combined until the password is removed in the program that created it.
- Check orientation. If a scanned page is sideways, fix it first with Rotate PDF, so it doesn’t end up sideways in the final document.
Merge step by step
- Open Merge PDF and add two or more files.
- Drag the file cards into the order you want, or use the arrow buttons. The number on each card shows its position.
- Press Merge PDF and download the result.
Because the tool runs in your browser, the files are combined on your own device and are not uploaded anywhere.
Things worth knowing
- Mixed page sizes are kept. If one file is A4 and another is US Letter, each page keeps its original size. That looks fine on screen, but it can cause scaling surprises when printing; choose “Fit” in the print dialog for a consistent result.
- File size adds up. The merged file is roughly the sum of its parts. If it is too big to email, run it through Compress PDF afterwards.
- Interactive elements may not carry over. Form fields, bookmarks and internal links from the original files may not survive a merge. If a form must stay fillable, keep it as a separate file.
- Number pages after merging, not before. Use Add Page Numbers on the finished document so the numbers run continuously.
A quick quality check
Open the merged PDF and scroll through it once: are the pages in the right order, right way up, and all present? Spot-check a page from each source file. It takes a minute and saves you from sending a document with a missing signature page.
