How to edit, merge and compress PDFs on your phone, with no app
By the fullpdftools team · Updated
Quick answer: open the tool you need (for example Merge PDF or PDF Editor) in Safari, Chrome or any modern mobile browser, tap the drop area to pick files from the Files app, Downloads, Google Drive or iCloud, run the tool and download. The result lands in Files → Downloads on iPhone and in the Downloads folder on Android. Nothing has to be installed, and the files are processed on the phone itself.
Many PDF apps want an account, a subscription or permission to your whole photo library. For the occasional job (signing a form, combining two documents, shrinking a file for an email) a browser tool is quicker. This guide covers where to find your files, where the results go, and what works best on a small screen.
Step 1: get the PDF onto the phone
- From an email: tap the attachment, then the share icon, and choose Save to Files (iPhone) or Download (Android).
- From WhatsApp or another chat app: open the document, tap the share or menu icon and save it to Files or Downloads.
- From cloud storage: Google Drive, iCloud Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox all appear in the phone’s file picker, so you can usually pick the file directly without downloading it first.
Step 2: run the tool in your browser
- Open the tool page in your browser. Bookmarking the tool list or adding it to your home screen saves time next time.
- Tap the drop area. Your phone shows a picker with options like Browse, Files, Photo Library or Camera.
- Pick the file (or several, for merging). The tool works on your phone; nothing is uploaded.
- Choose your options and tap the main button, then Download.
Step 3: find the result
| Phone | Where downloads go | How to share it |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone / iPad (Safari) | Files app → Downloads (on iCloud Drive or On My iPhone) | Open the file, tap the share icon, choose Mail, WhatsApp, etc. |
| Android (Chrome) | Downloads folder, also listed in Chrome’s menu → Downloads | Tap the download notification, or long-press the file in Files and tap Share |
Tools that produce several files, such as Split PDF and PDF to JPG, download a ZIP. Both iPhone’s Files app and the Files by Google app open ZIPs with a tap.
What works best on a phone
- Signing: the PDF Editor’s signature pad is easier with a finger than with a mouse. Turn the phone sideways for a wider signing area. See how to sign a PDF.
- Turning photos into a PDF: Image to PDF can take pictures straight from your photo library. Our photos-to-PDF guide covers lighting and page size.
- Shrinking a file for email: Compress PDF works the same as on a computer.
- Merging and reordering: drag the file cards with your finger; arrows on each card help if dragging is fiddly.
Limits to know about
- Memory. Because the work happens on the phone, very large files (hundreds of pages, or big scans) can be slow or fail on older phones. Close other tabs, or split the job into smaller parts.
- Stay on the page. Switching apps in the middle of a long job can pause or reload the browser tab. In the editor, download your work before leaving.
- HEIC photos open only in browsers that support them, such as Safari. In other browsers, use JPG photos.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install an app to edit a PDF on my phone?
No. The tools run in your phone’s browser. You can add the site to your home screen if you want it to feel like an app.
Where do downloaded PDFs go on iPhone?
In the Files app, under Downloads. Safari’s download list (the arrow icon in the address bar) also links to them.
Where do downloaded PDFs go on Android?
In the Downloads folder. Open the Files app or Chrome’s menu and tap Downloads.
Is it safe to use PDF tools on public Wi-Fi?
Our tools process files on your phone and don’t upload them, so the document itself doesn’t travel over the network. Only the web page is loaded.
Can I merge PDFs from different apps?
Yes. Save each PDF to Files or Downloads first, then select them all in Merge PDF.
